Position Overview:

The Third Officer, or Third Mate, plays a vital role in supporting the Chief Mate and Captain in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. As a junior officer, the Third Officer is primarily responsible for standing navigational watch, monitoring safety equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. Additionally, the Third Officer actively participates in deck maintenance and cargo operations, assisting in the loading and unloading of goods to ensure the proper stowage and security of cargo. This role also involves conducting routine safety drills, monitoring lifesaving and firefighting equipment, and supporting the deck crew in their day-to-day operations. The Third Officer acts as a key link between senior officers and the deck crew, ensuring smooth communication and operational efficiency. The ability to work independently during watch duties and take proactive measures to ensure safety and compliance is essential in this role.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Stand watch and ensure safe navigation, including monitoring radar, weather conditions, and navigation equipment.
  • Actively participate in deck maintenance, including the inspection and upkeep of safety and operational equipment.
  • Assist in the supervision and execution of cargo operations, ensuring safe loading, unloading, and securing of cargo.
  • Actively participate in cardo handling.
  • Assist the super cargo in sales documentation and customer relation.
  • Monitor and maintain lifesaving, firefighting, and other safety equipment, ensuring it is always in a state of readiness.
  • Participate in and lead safety drills, including fire, lifeboat, and emergency evacuation drills.
  • Assist the Chief Mate in the supervision of the deck crew, providing guidance and support when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with all maritime safety regulations and company policies.

 

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Valid STCW certification in accordance with safe manning
  • Basic knowledge of navigation, maritime safety, and cargo handling procedures.
  • Ability to operate and monitor navigational and safety equipment effectively.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Physically capable of performing demanding tasks and standing watch for extended periods.

 

General Duties:

  • The Third Officer must be ready to perform any additional duties as assigned by the Chief Mate, Captain, or ship management.
