HELPR-1 – Second Officer

SUMMARY
Responsible for the navigational planning and maintenance of the navigation charts and publications. The Second Officer is responsible for Health, Safety and Environmental matters onboard.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Hold navigational watches.
• Responsible for the weekly & Fortnightly update of paper charts.
• Responsible for the weekly & Fortnightly update of publication.
• Responsible for maintaining an up to date list of the bridge publications.
• Responsible for the weekly update of the ENP & ADP
• Responsible for the weekly & fortnightly update of AusENC and AVCS
• Draw up passage planning from port to port for each voyage the vessel undertakes, ensure adequate reference material is available and included within the passage plan and all required checklists and forms are completed and included. On completion of the voyage, ensure that an updated run sheet (timings and distances) is sent to the Master for inclusion in the end of trip report.
• Upon creation of a new route, ensure adequate process of approving/filing/recording. Assist Master as required in creation of mud maps for areas and ensure all control sheets are completed. Keep a systematic and tidy filing system for both.
• Ensure all radio checks are performed in accordance with legislation and all other bridge equipment is working in accordance with required specifications. Ensure that any errors or faults are reported to the Master immediately
• Deliver induction to all new crew onboard the vessel. Ensure all crew understand their duties in case of emergency and are comfortable with the location of all safety gear onboard.
• OH&S onboard representative, responsible for running a monthly OH&S meeting, filing results appropriately and chasing correspondence/corrective actions on any issues raised.
• Assist Mate with managing deck stock take.
• Prepare bridge order upon request and supervision of the Master
• Ensure compliance of all regulations, codes of conduct, standards and company policies at all times.

• In liaison with the Chief Mate ensure that all safety and firefighting equipment
is properly maintained and meets survey requirements.
• Assist with completion of PMS tasks as directed by the Mate.
• Assist all crew in their understanding of International Safety Management Systems (ISM)
• Observe all “Standing Orders” as issued by the Master.
• Monitor weather forecasting, reporting to the Master each day.
• Participation in drills as required by Statutory Regulation and undertake other shipboard/shoreside training as required by the Company.
• Attend crew meetings.
• Undertake any other duties as reasonably required by the ship board management.

Required to maintain the highest standards of behaviour and discipline.
Required to undertake other duties as reasonably directed by the Master.

CERTIFICATES AND QUALIFICATIONS

As per the jurisdiction of which the vessel is operating in at the time of deployment.

FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION

Food is provided free of charge whilst aboard the vessels.

As per the Navigation Act, it is the responsibility of all crew to keep crew quarters clean and presentable at all times. Quarters will be inspected periodically by Master and Purser.
